Our First Pre-Marital Counsel

I thank God that I am covered under a church and I have a caring Pastor who is discerned to go through the finalisation of the one of the biggest decisions a couple will ever make in their lifetime. As soon as our hearts are a bit settled from the joy of the success of our very romantic proposal, we quickly got hold of Ps Lai Ling to arrange for our very first pre-marital counsel class before our decision is made public. Initially I was very nervous and prepared in my mind of those big questions that we might be asked, such as ‘what makes you decided that this is the right time for marriage?’, ‘what do you think can hold your marriage through to eternity from your current relationship?’, etc. I guess I was putting too much pressure in myself…

No doubt that it was a lovely night with Ps Lai Ling. Being the first time to Pastor’s house I was impressed with the cleanliness and its space and stylishness. We were brought to the seats and served with glasses of water with much humility and courtesy from Ps Lai Ling which really humbled us. The night started with some chit-chat about how our relationship was developed and how the proposal was done. There goes all our Tasmania love story again…hehe. Ps Lai Ling started the first lesson with us extracted from the very popular marriage book by Bill and Lynne Hybels named ‘Fit To Be Tied’ (highly recommended for every couple in a relationship). The lesson was about the roles of a woman/wife and a man/husband – how we need to identify, respect and support the individual roles. Ps Lai Ling told us a lot of testimonies and life examples which truly helped us to prevent ourselves from going down to those undesirable paths. At last I shared about my personal expectation/concern for a lifetime marriage as I hope to learn more about the big picture of a complete family.

Turned out the night was a brilliant night of learning from the godly examples, especially from the Pastor’s family – with no hard questions asked..phew. Though I sincerely wished that I would be asked those kind of questions so that I will take time to figure out what him and I can truly bring for our marriage and the promising future together.
