Chapter 4 - The Search

Today we went to New Farm Park in Brisbane to do a site-visit for our possible wedding ceremony venue. Though it is a nice place, we eventually gave up the idea because - one, there is not much shade; two, we will need to arrange for tables and chairs to be transported to there since it is only a park instead of a function centre; three, it will be too distracting with possible strangers walking around. So too bad, we have to give it a miss.

Nevertheless, it was a fruitful trip as we were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and have some brilliant photos taken by my talented fiance with his beautiful 'mistress' Canon camera. Love the pictures very much as they remind me of the joy of searching for a suitable wedding venue. It can be very sweet if you know that it could become an avenue for both persons to contribute for the wonderful memory in the future; having the same agenda in mind and to be honest in sharing your own ideas with full acceptance from the other person; working on the same project so that your friends and yourselves can be blessed by it tremendously. Even though at times it could be tiring, but if you change your perspectives, it is actually an opportunity for both of you to enjoy the nature and the accompany of one another in the 'cheapest' way.

Love the verse and his creativity, especially his creativity and his artistic taste (no wonder his chose me! kaka...). There's a saying goes, 'a picture means a thousand words'. I believe as I look back after 10 years, I shall still admire the time we spent and what a wonderful partneI have been blessed with.....

Thanks Be To Mum!~

My Mum has been my greatest support and help throughout my decision-making process. She doesn’t only be my consultant when I was figuring out the best way to organise for the receptions in KL and KK, but she also does all the research and inspections in both places for me. With her help and discussions between him and I, we finally decided to have a reception in KK first followed by one in KL after the wedding in Brisbane. Mum has also been keeping an eye on the airfares for us. Reminding us the best time to get our tickers. Visiting the bridal galleries in KL asking for packages and price info. Including the photography package in KL. She has also keep on reminding me to take my time in organising everything and do take care of myself to prevent weight loss during this so-called stressful period.

Most surprisingly and warm-heartedly, Mum insisted to have a wedding reception in KK due to the first marriage of her children and has voluntered to cope with all the cost whether profit of loss herself. It’s so good to have a mum in this world and on my most important and special occasion. Thanks be to Mum for her generosity in planning and spending for our KK wedding – sure it’s our pleasure and joy to celebrate with her, our relatives, her friends and my friends there!

Take good care of your health, Mum, and may God’s covering, blessing and journey mercy be with you. Loving you and praying for you...

Events @ Cutting Edge ~ Hurray!

Today we finally found a very beautiful reception place! It was the Events @ Cutting Edge in Westend!

I think I found my favourite reception venue!!! I love the specially designed rooms that they have...

Love how the night view is so spectacular with the river view and the building and lighting.

Wot wot.....

Isn't the plastic chairs lovely!!! My heart cries out for them! But sadly they cost $60 EACH! Yes it's EACH!! Aiks.....

Pity that they currently don’t have any photos of weddings however above are some photos of their launch night which shows how lovely it looks at night.

Minimum spending at Events @ Cutting Edge is $6000. On top of that, they have a Theatre which can fit 60 people that I thought would be a good idea to show your guests a movie clip of your love story. Isn't it cool? According to their quote, it is $250 extra for that service. You then need to figure out whether you like to have it played at the beginning of the night or as a conclusion of the night.

Visit to The Decks Seafood

About 8pm, upon the arrival of my dear sister from Malaysia to Brisbane on her way to Melbourne for her hairdressing course, combining with a desire to check out a potential wedding reception venue, we headed to the Decks Seafood in Southbank. We were seated by a waitress whom we requested her to meet us with the Manager of the restaurant. We were greeted personally by the Manager who then shared with us a lot of information and ideas about organising a wedding reception at their place. He also shared about his own wedding which was at their backyard with the intimate friends and family. We love his honesty in prompting us to organise one that is within our own budget but not being pushed to invite more or less. He is very good in his business negotiating skills and never gave us an exact amount for the total costs we will be paying but an approximate amount according to the number and the kind of food we order. In one sense is good that he is willing to work with our budget but in another hand it even increased our blurriness and turned us away because we are not given a definite answer.

Frankly the atmosphere was good with nice in-house soft music, nature breeze from the deck through to the inside, a big TV at the corner (maybe can display a short love story clip), big dance floor in the middle, enough seats for more than 100 people. It does not suit us because we are only going to have 80 people and that to be offered a sole use of the restaurant for a Saturday night they are charging a Hire Fee of $2000, on the proviso that the wedding party is between 80 - 100 on the night.

Invite you to feel free in finding all of the details including floor plans, terms and conditions on the link below:

My other half has also blogged about this night on his own lil’ world:

Port Office Hotel Wedding

Monday morning, I visited The Port Office Hotel, along Margaret St opposite to Stamford Plaza Hotel, to inspect the venue for a wedding reception. I met Cassandra whom was very gentle and generous in touring me around and elaborating the floor plans and background decorations available for the venue.

She showed me a big album with a lot of pictures of the previously held wedding receptions. It was a great place with berry romantic atmosphere and they provide a pretty generous package with reasonable price per person ($75-$80+ excluding beverage p/p or $110 inclusive) with bonbonnieres provided. It has pretty settings and spacious space with exlcusive use for only $5000 min. spending on Sunday ($8000 on Saturday).

All decorations are included in the package too. They do have stylish table deco and nice chair bands. My only concerns would be car park space given that it is in the city and the tight arrangement for 80-100 sit-down guests.

I personally do not like the many columns in the restaurant that blocks the sight of one another and may make it hard to pick a central attention point where everybody can see clearly.

Like this classic picture!

Unfortunately, workplace has become a place where I can do as much Internet research on venues as I like without the constraint and limitation of the Internet capacity and speed. Hence planning on a whole-day venue visitation became my focus for the moment. Unexpctedly, I never felt tired of researching for venues, as long as I have a target in mind, i.e. a desired price per head, a location, etc. I can do it endlessly. As it drives and excites me when I manage to find a cheaper package, or a prettier place, in my next search. As soon as I sent him the above timetable for this coming Saturday, his reply was........guess what!

-_-

hahaha......pray that I wouldn't turn into a bridezilla....kakaka!

My First Gowns Testing

Praise God for QUT Classifieds! Despite my 'busy' schedule at work few days ago, I managed to read the following email notice from a very kind staff who is obviously pretty 'free' at work:

LAUDISTON VALUERS & AUCTIONERS
Laudiston Valuers and Auctioneers will be conducting a huge three-day sale of the complete contents of Abbey Brides, in store at Level 2, 60 Queen Street, Friday, Oct 31, from
9am to 8pm; Saturday, Nov 1 and Sunday, Nov 2, 9am to 4pm.
There will be huge savings of 50 per cent off marked prices on bridal and formal wear. No lay-bys.

Without further adure, I quickly sent out the invites to him. Without much delay he agreed to go with me on that weekend. Though there was really much doubt in mind that I was going to be able to get any bargained dress given my petite frame and the so-called 'sales' from an Australian bridal shop (yes! I don't believe in Aussie sale - it is never really cheap at all!). I have also forwarded the 'good news' to a few of my brides-to-be friends.

On Saturday, we did manage to try on a few seemingly attractive bridal gowns. Yet as expected, they did not look good on me. A bit too big still though I have picked only th size 5. Funny enough was the lady tried to push in a few big thick cup sponges into my gown, which gave me a horrible look, as he agreed too. haha. but it was fun trying out the gowns, with the help of a very friendly staff.

I met my friend there who was managed to get a simple-styled wedding gown for a price as cheap as $500! What a bargain! and it did take her hubby-to-be's breadth away...what a good deal!

That day, I realised 2 things: (1) it's not exactly as a drama shows that any gown on a bride-to-be's body can take her groom-to-be's breadth away (at least my attempt was not successful); (2) for any lady with a petite frame, you better think of getting your gown from any bridal shop in Malaysia or any Asian countries, which can ensure you that they will fit well (prayerfully >_<) with an affordable price (if you hire, of course!)

Thanks Mum!

Dearest Mum

Thank you for your consistent reminder and concerns for our wedding prep. You are always passionate and eager in helping out to the fullest. We thank and appreciate you for that.

We love to have our pre-wedding photo-shots in KL..because looking at all aspects it’s more handy to do everything in KL then have reception dinner there straight away…pls check out the following website for one of our friends pre-wedding photo-shots in at a Bridal Studio called LV (I think) in SS2, the photographer’s name is MENG SOON: http://calvinkong.com/my-timestamp/our-pre-wedding-pictures/

We like the photos style to be modern, stylish and graceful. We don’t prefer natural as that’s everyone’s style. So would be great if you can pls check out those photographers with that kind of style for us. It would also be very very much appreciated if you could also check out any good hotel or restaurant for reception dinner in KL. It’s not necessary to be in the city (it will be expensive!). Kepong or any suburb is fine, bearing in mind that people will be coming from Rawang, and some of my friends in anywhere else in KL.

Any comments mum? Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Love you heaps too.

Much Love,
Leann & Joel

Wedding Beverage…How?….

Have you ever wondered whether to stick to the beverage package for a certain price per head provided by your restaurant or reception venue? Or to go for based on consumption? Which one is more reasonable and worthwhile? If you do take the beverage package, are you able to get a discounted price per head, or have some bargain? No idea how much people would drink but do not want to risk giving too little or much for the guest?

I went through the same concern so I knew how you feel. Thank God for my friend who has just recently had a wedding with the similar friends background as me. She advised me to take the option of based on consumption. Go ahead with a minimum of $1000 for bar tab first. If through the night the bar tab goes down to $200, request for the restaurant/venue staff to consult the best man or the floor manager (definitely not the bride or groom) if an increase is required. Should it be in the middle of the night only, certainly it is required. However if it is nearly the end of the night, it’s fine to leave it as it is. For drinks choose only wine, champagne, soft drinks, juice, coffee and tea. Do not provide spirits as they’ll be very expensive. In the end my friend increased for another $500 but ended up only paying $1100++, so it was about $15 p/head.

Most people drank a lot in the beginning of the evening but not so much in the end. Besides, your church friends won’t drink that much either. I think based on consumption might be good as many people don’t want much alcohol, so it won’t be expensive. The average is people drinking 3 drinks the whole night.

The option for a fixed price p/head really depends on the cost p/head. But if the price/head will give you a better control of your budget as it is all down on the paper and will not change. You may be able to bring your own wine/champagne if they allow you for toasting as certain family members did have such experience.
In conclusion, depending on your budget and the kind of friends you have, to work out the best situation that suits you!

Real Life Weddings

A Very good website – with beautiful albums of real-life weddings in Brisbane provided with full details – from reception, photography to all you can think of. Very stylish posture in album as well. Do check out and get an inspiration or good idea for everything (even good idea for receptions).

http://www.queenslandbrides.com.au/features/realLifeWeddings/

In real life, is there any possibility of referencing to other people's weddings or marriages and then try our best to copy only the good points but not the bad ones? At some point, you can try your best not to step into the mistakes that other couples have made, but who can guarentee that the end-result will always be the same as what have happened to other couples in their case? Sometimes I wonder...for those couple whom used the slogan '..happily ever after...', do they really end up in a happy marriage? or another story goes from there on...?

Funny Incident

Haha...today I contacted Golden Ox at margate and confirmed that they are available on 10/10 for wedding reception. I was really happy though the bigger room is booked out but the smaller room is available which can fit up to 80ppl. And guess what! Their price is $65 ppl INCLUDING EVRYTHING!!! Which means beverage, decorations, chairs covers & sashes…we don’t need to worry about that!!!

I get all so excited after hearing that from the very friendly lady on the phone and I’ve made an appointment to see her at 12 noon (as she comes in the office at 11am and has wedding from 1pm). I emailed him immediately and thought how good that was! Praise God! As ceremony is only $420…and including everythg too!! They are even so generous in chairs for 60% of the guests (which means for us if we have 120 ppl..72 chairs will be given..bravo!).
Little did I know that, as he looked at the map, it is so far far far away from our desired location. I then have to quickly call them and request for a cancellation of the appointment. Haha...this incident taught me to check out the map carefully before making any appointment even though it sounds SO cheap!

But certainly...for anyone who likes to travel a fair bit of distance for their wedding for great view and a special place (which I like to but...), feel free to visit their website/contatc them:

The Beautifying Work

.....stumble upon the links and article below...which made me realised how much cleansing and beautifying work I need to do before the wedding. Looking at the expensive price the beauty clinics or saloons Brisbane has to offer, deep in mind I am silently planning whether I should go back to malaysia for a trip to and get a full package for those bride-to-be. assuming that malaysia should have more offer with more pro service....being a bride is definitely not 'cheap' at all....

Love to share the following tips & links with you.

Top 15 Bridal Beauty Secrets

Insider's tips for perfect wedding hair and makeupAdd page to favoritesKate Wood
We've gone straight to the experts to find out their best tips for how to do everything -- and we mean everything -- to get the most out of your wedding hair and makeup. Whether you're planning to look totally natural or all-out glam, here's how to…

From The Knot
150+ wedding hairstyle photos
Ultimate wedding dress search
6 hot wedding hair trends

1. Fix an eye makeup mishap.Be extra careful -- once you've already smudged, you don't want to make it worse or you'll have to start all over again from scratch. Scott Miselnicky, executive director of global product development at Clinique, suggests wetting a Q-tip with makeup remover and gently dabbing at the mistake until it's completely gone. Go slowly so you don't take off too much!

2. Avoid Shirley Temple curls.Pageant-perfect curls are a bride's worst nightmare. For a natural look, wrap a section of hair around the outside of the barrel and hold for three seconds. Release and let cool, then lightly run your fingers through your hair. And don't forget -- vary the size of your curls, and switch up the direction in which you wrap them.

3. Fake a great pair of cheekbones."If you're face is roundish, shading lightly can work wonders!" says Lucy Baldock-Sacchi, international makeup artist and founder of Lucy B. Cosmetics. She suggests using a matte bronzer just below your cheekbones, then following up with a pink or peach blush on the apples of your cheeks. To tone it down, skip the bronzer and use a hint of shimmer on the highest point of your cheekbones.

4. Flatter your face. When it comes to choosing a hairstyle, all of our experts emphasize that your look needs to harmonize with your gown. Also, make sure to choose a style that will bring out your best feature, explains Jamal Hammadi, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hamadi Beauty. "For an updo, placing the style between the top of your ear and the top of your eye (like a high ponytail) will enhance the shape of your eyes, while placing it lower (like a chignon) will put the focus more on your lips and neck," he says.

5. Stave off a breakout.Right before the wedding is not the time to try out a new skincare regimen. No matter how tired you are, make sure you stick to your cleansing schedule and remove your makeup before you go to bed! If you really need more ammo, try a mask with salicylic acid.

6. Apply perfect foundation. It only takes two tools to do this right: a quality brush and a makeup sponge. The brush will give you coverage, while the sponge will blend away any streaks or remove excess buildup.

7. Pull off a bold lip color.Lots of brides like to amp up their look for the reception, and a deeper lip hue is a great way to do it. "Using a brighter lip color will always make your teeth look whiter; a big plus on your wedding day!" says Stila makeup artist Sarah Lucero. Keep all the rest of your face relatively neutral, and your eye makeup soft -- not severe. "Also, make sure your cheek and lip colors are in the same color family," she says.

8. Get voluminous locks.Even if you're not going with a curly style, a curling iron or rollers should be in your repertoire. "Blow out your hair with a round brush for body, then follow up with a curling iron all over," explains Edward Tricomi, co-owner of Warren-Tricomi Salons.

9. Apply alluring eye shadow.Eye shadow color trios and quads can be difficult to decode: How do you know where to use each shade? According to Baldock-Sacchi, it's perfectly fine to break the rules and experiment. If you want your eyes to look wider, she recommends using the lightest shade on the inner corner to give your peepers a more open look. Shimmering shades can be used all over and look amazing layered over color. The darker shades should be used for contouring in the crease or the center of the lid.

10. Keep your lipstick on your lips.Miselnicky suggests applying a small amount of vaseline on to your teeth to keep lipstick from winding up on your teeth. "Also, gently blot your lipstick with a tissue after you have applied it to remove any excess," he says. "Believe me, the groom will be happy!"

11. Fight the frizzies."Always try to wash and rinse your hair with cool water, which will help maintain its natural moisture and prevent your hair from drying out," Hammadi says. Follow it up with a frizz-fighting product that will boost your protection level.

12. Make mascara run-proof.Waterproof mascara is a wedding day must-have. "I use waterproof on everyone involved in the wedding party because you never know who will tear up!" Lucero says. For lower lashes, she recommends applying mascara with a flat eyeliner brush rather than the mascara wand. "This trick prevents smearing under your eyes, which can make you look tired," she explains.

13. Boast a beautiful decolletage. You want your chest and shoulders to have clear, glowing skin -- especially if you're wearing a strapless gown. Debbie D'Aquino, vice president of global product development at Clinique, recommends wearing clothing that breathes and keeps perspiration from building up on your skin (this goes double for workout wear). Cleanse with a treatment that includes salicylic acid. We love ones that come in spray bottles because it's so much easier to apply to the back.

14. Prevent dark under-eye circles. It might be tough, but Diane Berson, M.D., says it's key that you get plenty of sleep (and not just the night before the wedding). "Sleep with your head elevated on a pillow to reduce puffiness, and try not to rub your eyes," she says. It's also a good idea to use an eye cream that brightens as well as hydrates.

15. Touch up your makeup. You may not have time to redo your makeup before the reception starts, but you should give yourself a quick once-over in order to make sure you stay looking great (after all, nearly every second of the reception will be photographed!). Makeup expert Francis Roman of Butterfly Studio says to skip blush (which should last just fine) and your eyelids (too risky). Instead, apply another layer of lip color, and blot your T-zone with an oil-removing paper. Then run a makeup sponge or a Q-tip beneath your lower lashes to remove any mascara or eye shadow that may have smudged or fallen beneath them, and you're good to go.

Well...today was our first experience. It was quite fun yet tiring. We ended up skipping the last place as it's too far away and the venue does not look attractive to us though its package is just so cheap. I love visiting the venues, talking to different people (it can be very pleasant if they are nice outgoing people) and exchanging thoughts or simply talking in the car with him. But something I learned today is to ask smart questions and as detailed as possible so that helps us making the decision whether to drop that place and put it in our list.

Chapter 3 - The Planning

The first thing I've done to start my wedding preparation is - to email the QUT Classifieds community about a recommendation for a place for wedding ceremony and reception. What a supportive community it is and a short-cut way to get more information through the words of mouth.

They are more helpful than you could ever imagine. So I received lotsa responses - hope this helps those who are starting their wedding plan as well:

***************************************************************************
We went to a great wedding reception at the State Library. I think it was called the Qld Terrace, but if you look on their website you'll probably find some info about it. It was a great venue. I think you'll need a caterer as well, though.

***************************************************************************
I'd also try Customs House or Watt Modern Dining. Both venues are on the river and I think they have function menus especially for weddings, etc.

***************************************************************************
There is always McGuires Hotels - The Colmslie probably has one of the nicer function rooms which can be halved. They do charge room hire as well though. They have a garden too I think if it's a celebrant wedding (as does Calamvale etc). A couple like Alexandra Hills also have hotel rooms. When I was doing my marriage celebrants course, I looked at Victoria park Golf Club, though they were a little expensive I reckon.
Heaps on Google.

***************************************************************************
for my own wedding in 2000 we had 36 guests. For it we hired a beautiful marquee with cathedral windows from Garden City Hire which we 'pitched' in a private garden (our own, but you may have a friend/family member who has a nice garden). We had it privately catered (I can find the caterer if you are interested) as a wedding breakfast. We also hired a string quartet - again I may still have these details.

***************************************************************************

I got married in a open chapel at a beautiful golf course out the back of Coolangatta.
I won’t say that it was cheap as it was not, but ask me if it was worth it the answer is most definitely yes.
The chapel was utterly gorgeous and we were able to get dressed on site and use for the morning and night.
We then walked about 20 yards to our reception in a gorgeous barn which was so lovely and the staff were brilliant.
Do a search on Woodlands Manor Gold Coast

***************************************************************************
Just a couple of suggestions from an audience perspective. I recently attended a wedding at Boulevarde Gardens at Indooroopilly. The wedding was held in the garden, about 70 people, chairs were provided, there was a rotunda for the bride and groom and ceremony, and white bows for decorations, and flowers. After the ceremony we moved to another area for drinks and nibbles, then inside for the reception.
Another wedding I attended a few years ago was at the Indooroopilly Golf Club. Once again, the wedding ceremony was held in the grounds, and we moved indoors for the reception. I like the idea of wedding and reception at the same venue, but this may not be want you want. No idea of the costs.

***************************************************************************
After holding a conference recently at Victoria Park Golf Club, I would certainly avoid this venue.

***************************************************************************
My son was married at Victoria Park Golf Course last December – had the ceremony and the reception there. It was a “low budget” event – finger food and wine/beer but there is also the option of a sit down dinner. The staff very helpful and friendly and everyone had a ball.

***************************************************************************
We’re having our ceremony in a church but the place where we’re having our reception also does weddings on their balcony, with the sun setting over the boats at Scarborough marina. Very gorgeous. Check out
www.sunsetblue.com.au – very reasonable price for ceremony ($300 or something like that).
Or there’s also Reid’s Place, also in Scarborough
www.reidsplace.com.au – a bit more expensive but VERY beautiful and totally full of pampering for the bride and bridal party. I went there a few weekends ago to look at it and it was just gorgeous!

***************************************************************************
My recommendation below is based purely on my experience as a guest, so I cannot say whether this venue is reasonably priced or not. Custom House is great! True that it doesn't have a garden and nowhere close to a golf course, but the wedding that we went to had the ceremony done in the back area downstairs, which was on the river and it was beautiful. The reception room upstairs from the ceremony area was nicely decorated & the food (including the canapé that we were served while waiting for the reception room to be opened) was nice. Overall, very classy. The dance floor could be a big bigger, but I think that perhaps you can request that, since I think the room can accommodate about 120 people and you will only have around 70 guests. For that wedding, I know that the bride booked a room at the Marriott, which is only a short distance away, and got herself ready there and actually walked along the river to the wedding venue, which saved them the cost of hiring a wedding car. The bride & groom took their photos in & around the venue and, whilst I think the skills and techniques of the photographer determine the results of the photos, the ones showing the Custom House as the background were great, make them look like they were in Italy or Paris.
Hope this is useful.

***************************************************************************
We have a lot of weddings at our golf club at Bribie Island.
I have attached the website as the outlook and venue are beautiful
http://www.pacificharbourgolf.com.au/main_golf.php
Click on the weddings and functions key.

***************************************************************************
A fantastic venue is the Hillstone at St Lucia Golf course.
Check out the website
http://www.hillstonestlucia.com.au/hillstone-weddings.html.

***************************************************************************
I don't know where you live, but the Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club at Bribie Island has a lovely reception room. You can also get married on the deck over looking the Golf Course. Their prices are pretty reasonable. They book out very quickly. Their number is: 1300 744 653 and their website is
www.pacificharbour.com.au, they are located at Banksia Beach. My wedding is in October and it will be held at Bribie RSL. There is some nice reasonably priced accommodation on the Island, for all price ranges.

***************************************************************************
My son was married at Keperra Golf Club, I would recommend this venue. There is a lovely enclosed garden setting for the wedding and they will allow professional photos to be taken around the course.
Food was also excellent.

Hope your find somewhere suitable

***************************************************************************
I'm getting married in 2 months in the Mt Cotton Rainforest Gardens. They are seriously the most beautiful gardens in Brisbane, and they have many different options for weddings and lots of different spots to choose from. We're having 120 guests with the ceremony/reception in the same place, and chairs are included in the package. They host weddings with as little as no guests up to 500. We've visited many times now and been to another wedding there before. It's wonderful!

http://www.rainforestgardens.com.au/

Basically you pay by the hour. We've booked our garden from 2pm - 7pm on a Friday, for around $1,000. It gets cheaper the less hours you have, and I think we've booked the most expensive option. Go and have a look one Saturday: even if you don't end up hiring the venue it makes for a beautiful day out, and you can take a picnic lunch.
Best of luck with your preparations,

***************************************************************************
Don't go to Victoria Park!!

***************************************************************************
I was a guest at a wedding held at Boulevard Gardens (Indooroopilly) in June and everything was very nice.
The bride and groom were extremely happy with everything....

***************************************************************************
The St Lucia Golf club is really lovely but I was there as a guest, so don't know how expensive it was... but very beautiful..

***************************************************************************
I can highly recommend the Pavilion at Albion. My son had his reception here and it has large open areas suitable for ceremonies. It was superb and the people excellent. Website follows
Cheers and good luck

http://www.thepavilion.net.au

***************************************************************************
We had our wedding reception and celebrant at Eve’s on the River at Teneriffe. It was wonderful we thought. They have since opened another establishment Eve’s on the Park in the city gardens and have heard that is good too.
are you looking for a celebrant? If so, I can recommend a really good celebrant. Sheridan Bryant 0418887646.

***************************************************************************
We had a lovely reception at the Icon Bar and Bistro at Cleveland - right on the marina and staff were excellent. Great venue for a smaller function and no venue hire and I think we paid about $35 per head with a bar tab

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at Maleny Manor (www.malenymanor.com.au) on the sunshine coast. It was just lovely. I arrived there in the morning in my casual clothes, I had arranged for the makeup and hair people to meet me there, so there was no running around to make appointments and getting in and out of hot cars! We had our ceremony and photos in the gardens and then we all went inside for the reception. It was so nice and relaxed and there was no public gawking at us! There are lots of nice accommodation places around, so out guests made a weekend of it. We had also organised a bus to collect everyone and return everyone after the reception - no drink driving and no late appearances!! I can certainly recommend them. Marlene and Simon (who run it) are absolutely fantastic and make the day perfect and stress free!
My Mum got married at the Nudgee Golf Club last year and also had the reception there. Neither she nor her husband have any interest in golf but it was a beautiful place for a wedding - golf courses are always green, even during a drought. There were married outside on the golf course, then had photos taken around the course while their guests had a drink or two. After photos everybody went into the function room for the reception. There is heaps of parking available and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
I live at Bribie Island and play golf at Pacific Harbour.
They host a lot of weddings.
Check out the website and click on "weddings and functions"
It is worth asking if they can cater for a small group, I wouldn't be surprised if they can.
The outlook and the surroundings are lovely.

My son was married at Keperra Golf Club, I would recommend this venue. There is a lovely enclosed garden setting for the wedding and they will allow professional photos to be taken around the course.

***************************************************************************
We had our reception at Royal on the Park. From memory I think that they can cater by head as opposed to minimum numbers. Helen Russo was our contact. Phone number and email are below if you wanted to give her a call.

07 3112 1693
helen_russo@royalonthepark.com.au

***************************************************************************
We had our wedding at the Bardon Conference centre located about 5 minutes from the Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens. We only had about 30 people there for the ceremony (held in their gazebo on site) and then had a sit down dinner for about 20. They were really good and very well priced. They gave us a room for the night there and I was able to get ready there so I didn't have to worry about how I was going to get to the wedding, hiring cars etc. They've got a fairly big property and there are plenty of nice places to get your photos taken - plus the Mt Cootha lookout and botanic gardens are really close so you don't have to worry about travel time to and from your wedding photo locations.

***************************************************************************
I have a friend getting married at Maleny (a reception centre with accommodation attached) – not sure of the name “something Resort”.

Another friend is having their ceremony & cocktail reception at the Powerhouse which I think will be an awesome site. Very unique place with interesting spaces. Theirs is on the rooftop and I think she said $1400 to hire plus the costs of catering/drinks supplier.
A family member had a reception at the All Saints' Centre, Wickham Terrace (Anne Street end). Air conditioned and with excellent catering facilities. Lots of parking nearby too and a small dance floor that would I think suit the numbers you have mentioned.

Sorry, don't have a telephone number but it would be obtainable on the web.
When is the wedding planned for?

***************************************************************************
You do know our Old Government House at GP is being renovated for completion around mid next year... and will be available for wedding hires. :)
If this sounds suitable and need more info, contact Elaine MacRae who is our events officer for the venue. (
e3.king@qut.edu.au)

Also, I had my wedding at marycairncross park in Maleny. was simply beautiful.
i hired a bus for 55 people and bused them from Brisbane and back, was only about $800 for this, and was nothing due to saving heaps of money on the venue being BYO and brought in my own wine etc. sowas awesome too as everyone didn’t have to worry about not drinking etc. Food was good quality standup coctail so none of the forced seating senario which worked well. ... anyhow just an idea to throw into the mix.

Engagement Announcement at Church

Today, very unusual, I woke up very early in the morning. Getting ready. Feeling pretty nervous. The wardrobe seems to be so lacking of clothes today. Making a decision of what to wear seems pretty hard. What am I doing???

There is Fathers' Day celebration at our church today. But it is not the main issue. Ps Lai Ling was on the stage giving 'special announcement'. Everyone goes 'Wowoo!', especially our Wei Hoong.

Today, at church, for the very first time, and surely will be the last time, he and I were publicly announced............as...................................ENGAGED COUPLE!!!!

Gosh...it was such a nervous moment. not knowing whether to stand or not. to turn to the audience or not. to shake hands with people or not. to......whatever. I was supposed to be in the intercessory prayer team which I did. Yet until after moment I was only able to fully concentrate. Sorry, church. Today was a busy day that I got myself involved in both intercessory prayer team and the Hope Bookshelf duties. But maybe because of my position near the church entrance, congratulations after congratulations were what I've been hearing for the whole day. The next question you can imagine is: when is your wedding?! This question we haven't thought deeply yet so it was a general answer that I gave: around Oct 2009 or March 2010. The next response then was: huh? 2010? that's too long.......so here we go.
I was grateful to be surrounded by so many sincere and generous people in my church who can't stop showering me with words of blessings and concern. It was great to be made publicly accountable as an engaged couple too! For the whole day, the words are still clear in my mind....

Ms Joyce Chia Ying Tan announces the engagement of her daughter, Leann Loo, to Joel Sim, the son of Mr and Mrs Sim See Tian.

The Announcement to High School Mates

It was funny how you thought of spreading your good news to your high school mates whom you haven't met for a long time but you don't know how yet you just can't help to love to share with them.

One fine day when I received a greeting email from one of my ex-Kian Kok Middle School mate whom always fills my inbox with his interesting forwarded emails, I just thought to tell him how I am and also let him know about my engagement. Farney....how he responded to me plus CC'ed all of our close high-school mates. New does travel fast....but it was kinda great that their congratulations email just came through abundantly after that and became a topic for us to be re-bonded again. Afterall, good news are meant to be shared right?

Hey Leann,

So u r alive, u little rascal. (how dare him? haha) u have any idea how many times i email n query in msn and u never reply?

Do u sneeze a lot? (i don't unfortunately >_<) cox we have been cursing u every time we gather. EVERYONE get no reply from u.

But, finally u did and it's a big red news. Congratulation :) I will spread the news. how can we c ur engagement photo if there's any?

make sure u invite us when the time comes. maybe i can't make it but u need to invite too. However, u r not the only one getting engaged and planning for marriage. Hopefully he reply this mail n tell u when he's getting married and tell u why it's lily instead of Diana (his gf's name, hmm, sometimes he call her wife, sometimes fiancee, i'm confused) pls explain when u read this.

........

hmm... u r saying "Surely will pay a visit to Alex's saloon when I am back to KK."
this mean u r coming back? soon?
yea, it's exciting to receive ur mail. keep in touch!

Our First Pre-Marital Counsel

I thank God that I am covered under a church and I have a caring Pastor who is discerned to go through the finalisation of the one of the biggest decisions a couple will ever make in their lifetime. As soon as our hearts are a bit settled from the joy of the success of our very romantic proposal, we quickly got hold of Ps Lai Ling to arrange for our very first pre-marital counsel class before our decision is made public. Initially I was very nervous and prepared in my mind of those big questions that we might be asked, such as ‘what makes you decided that this is the right time for marriage?’, ‘what do you think can hold your marriage through to eternity from your current relationship?’, etc. I guess I was putting too much pressure in myself…

No doubt that it was a lovely night with Ps Lai Ling. Being the first time to Pastor’s house I was impressed with the cleanliness and its space and stylishness. We were brought to the seats and served with glasses of water with much humility and courtesy from Ps Lai Ling which really humbled us. The night started with some chit-chat about how our relationship was developed and how the proposal was done. There goes all our Tasmania love story again…hehe. Ps Lai Ling started the first lesson with us extracted from the very popular marriage book by Bill and Lynne Hybels named ‘Fit To Be Tied’ (highly recommended for every couple in a relationship). The lesson was about the roles of a woman/wife and a man/husband – how we need to identify, respect and support the individual roles. Ps Lai Ling told us a lot of testimonies and life examples which truly helped us to prevent ourselves from going down to those undesirable paths. At last I shared about my personal expectation/concern for a lifetime marriage as I hope to learn more about the big picture of a complete family.

Turned out the night was a brilliant night of learning from the godly examples, especially from the Pastor’s family – with no hard questions asked..phew. Though I sincerely wished that I would be asked those kind of questions so that I will take time to figure out what him and I can truly bring for our marriage and the promising future together.

Chapter 2 - The Announcements

The first few people that I told immediately after his proposal (of coz except the Launnie crowd) were Grace Rompies, Shimei Yang and Jojo Tan.

Grace is my shepherd who builds me up in my life and guides me in growing to become a more faithful Christ-follower. She plays a big part in my life and is always the one whom I like to share my ups and downs with. She has just newly married so I know that she can identify with my feeling and sure enough she was surprised yet joyful for me.

Very quickly I text to tell my best friend in Brisbane - Shimei too. She is whom I share everything with - that kinda friend whom you don't need to be afraid of when you share. She just seems to be able to accept anything and everything from a friend and is a good listener. What makes me feel most comfortable is her openness in sharing too. She is also my dinner mate - we always go out for dinner so we can chat the whole night away (though we always end up very tired and thirsty). I always wonder how could she hold so much things in her mind (things that happened in few weeks) to throw them all out during our dinner. She is too shocked and never thought that it would be so soon.

The 3rd person whom I told is my leader, Jojo. She is whom I look up to and respect the most in my vibrant, warm-and-fuzzy, happy family in Christ - NG 3. He and I decided to be accountable to our leader and let her know about it. When I called her, and he grabbed my phone to speak to her, the first thing he said was: 'Hi Jojo, I am now with Mrs Sim-to-be'. It was so sweet. Surely a voice that is filled with excitement, shock and joy came out from the other end. I joked and asked if she 'permitted' our marriage as deep in my mind I felt that I am still so young, look so young and not seem to be ready, I just need some affirmation and some 'yes'. Jojo said 'of coz'! She then recommended us to give Ps Lai Ling a call so we can arrange for a pre-marital counsel class soon before making it public at church.
Very soon the whole world seems to have known about it and I've received many text of congratulations, including Brisbane and Launnie. What a joy to spread....

Chapter 1 - The Proposal

Wedding is every girl's dream.

However, for myself, I've never thought about what my dream wedding would be. I recalled having such a conversation with my friend before and I even admired her for being able to just talk about it fluently. I indeed never thought about it and never have time for it. It is not that I do not like wedding or getting married but I just always think that the idea should come as a flow when it is the time....

...............................Until the 15th of August, 2008...........................

He. a guy whom was brought to me by the grace of God. a guy who I met in Launceston, Tasmania. a guy who I has been with for the past 3 years. a guy who chooses to love me for who I am at all times. a guy who loves me so much that he made the decision and the move to form a marriage with me. a guy whom now I called fiance.

Today is a cozzy day. It is the 5th day of my travel in Launceston, Tasmania. This was my 1st visit since I last left for Brisbane back in January 2007. I enjoyed spending time relaxingly with my old friends around me in Launceston very much, especially with YC, Ming Ming, Joanne, Sia and Michael. As normal today we planned to shop around in the city. It was strange that I received a text message from Michael inviting me to go for an expensive lunch at Stillwater Restaurant with a mystery friend who wanted to give me this special treat. The day started with a lot of curiosity in my heart. Yet thinking not to put off the plan and favour of others, I agreed to go, without any other company as instructed by Michael. Joanne was kind enough to send me there. On the way we kept guessing who that special friend would be - as according to Michael he/she is not familiar with anyone else. Feeling a bit funny, an idea flow to my mind but soon I thought, nah, it's impossible. He is in Brisbane, and even sent me a text in the early morning telling me that it was raining back there and too bad that he couldn't go for a site visit. He even reminded me to becareful and he is fine no matter whom I am going to meet.

As soon as I arrived at Stillwater, my heart pumps very strongly. As I entered the restaurant and notified a waitress about the table-booking name, Michael, she immediately recognised me and with great smile on her face. It was weird. She got me to a table near the window. As soon as I sat down, I smiled from the bottom of my heart, as I saw a black box with a note on the top goes, 'To Leann (Please open)'. It is clearly his materpiece. The album titled Memories. The photos, the touching words and our story in Tasmania took my breadth away. I was deeply touched and in tears. Half-way through it, my favourite love song was in the air - L-O-V-E by Natalie Cole. As I turned back, he was standing at my back with a bunch of roses and gosh!!! TIFFANY!! my favourite brand! Though in tears, I joked with him that if he has just bought a Tiffany box for a random ring. As he sat and I continued reading the nicely done album, he pulled out 2 letters that really impressed me and affirmed me of his heart. The 1st letter was a congratulation letter from his parents telling me how much they love me and happy about our marriage. I love them very much and indeed their affirmation and pearl of wisdom for a marriage blew me away. The 2nd letter was what made me cry even more - an ask-for-permission letter from him to my mum for my hand for marriage (which was passed to my sister during her visit in July 2008 without my knowledge) and a joyful and loving response from mum about this decision of our lives. As I finally flipped through to the last page of the album, he slowly took out an envelope with the last photo in it - WILL YOU MARRY ME? are the printing. With even more tears in my eyes, he quickly came to my side with the ring. I naughtily said with my 2 fingers pointing at each other: 'yee...how come no kneeling down one?' haha. He then knelt down and without even my response the ring is already on my finger. Haha...what a shy guy.

The waitress congratulated us while pouring us with a glass of celebration champagne. We had a very enjoyable lunch reflecting our journey together, taking photos of one another, the roses, the ring, the food - with the intention of making these moments last. We walked down the street hand in hand, knowing that we are already on a journey of 2-become-1. The day does not stop there as soon we met up our friends who set me up for the proposal. Words of thankfulness and teasing went on and on implying how 'innocent' I was being the last to know among all of them. Nevertheless, it is the 1st time I thought it was so sweet to be a fool of love.

At night, our dear Launnie friends specially organised an engagement party for us. Little did I know that during the couple-of-hour-lunch, they were in the city shopping for decorative stuff for us and even decorated Theresa & Peter's Dynasty Restaurant beautifully and sweetly for us. What an honour to have such dear friends who are willing to go that extra mile for our celebration. That night was the sweetest night ever. I noted my face was radiant on that night. It must be the magic of love and the grace of God. We had a very sumptutous dinner with abalone, scallop, prawns and lobsters. Besides taking photos endlessly and chit-chatting around, Peter and Theresa shared with us some pearl of wisdom for marriage. He and I gave speeches to express our thankfulness to God and the brothers and sisters around us for their blessings. As always, I was in tears again. I just can't help thanking God everytime for blessing me with him. I trust that my God will be with us on this road of marriage, and nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God and each other.

Praise You and thank You, my Heavenly Father.
